One Day work - shop to Masons in Kilinochchi & Mullaithivu Districts

Since construction work commenced in Kilinochchi and Mullaithivu districts. one day work shops for Traditional Masons were organized in Jeyapuram Kilinochchi and Palainager in Mullaithivu.

Workshops were inaugurated by the respective G.A.A in Jeyapuram and Palaingaer, where 40 Masons and 34 Masons attended the workshop programmes in the two districts. Most of the masons who attaended the workshop did not have any pervious experience in constructing NEHRP houses. Hence the opportunity was  utilized  to explain the NEHRP  strategy  , ‘home owner driven concept’ and what methods will have to be  adopted to complete the house within the Rs. 3,25,000 which is provided to the beneficiaries.

They were instructed on how they could complete construction of the houses using local materials, avoiding waste and by getting full participation of the beneficiary family during the construction. They understood how a house worth Rs. 500,000 could be constructed by adopting simple methods

One of the methods introduced to them was the use of concrete productions in housing construction. Photographs of house where using of concrete product were shown to them as photographs and by power point presentation. They were given illustration as to how the cost will be reduced by using concrete door and window frames in housing. They were shown that apart from the cost reduction, how this will also help in conserving the environment bye use of alternate materials in place of timber. The concrete frames were taken and displayed and these attracted the Masons. They were prepared to use them in housing provided they are made available locally. NEHRP informed them that arrangements would be made to supply them to the beneficiaries

Further since the Traditional masons lost all their tools during displacement, Mason tools worth Rs. 2500 were issued to them at the end of workshop. Respective G.A.A handed over the tools to the masons. This gesture of issuing tools to the Mason who lost their tools was praised by G.A.A. By issuing tools twin objective of helping the mason and hastening of reconstruction of houses in the are a were made possible.
